Schwinn Caliente, only $20. I had one of these 40 years ago, in that classic ‘70s brown. I gave it away ages ago because it was too small for me to ride.

The reason I loved the Caliente was the interesting freewheeling system it used. As you coasted the chain still moved, and this allowed you to easily change gears without needing to pedal. It was a great way to introduce kids to 10-speed bicycles, but even after learning how to ride it was a nice convenience feature.

Hmm, could I put that sprocket and derailleur setup on my Cannondale?...

So the freewheel was between the front gears and the pedals?

I had one as well. I loved the freewheeling system, I thought the bike was broken when I first got it.

As I recall, yes. The pedals could remain stationary whilst the chain still moved, as long as the bike was moving. It used the Shimano FF system.

Mine was spicy chestnut, just like the one in the catalog.

That’s a nice bike for $20!

Neat. I bought a Schwinn Traveller (III I think? Dunno much of bikes) from a trift shop for like $30. I still need to get new tires for it, get the front back into round, and free up the stuck shifters. It’s supposed to have 15 speeds but has like two maybe right now.

Only 37 pounds! And a big savings over the original $179.95 retail... :D The FF system was pretty cool though:
